Question by April: affects on a baby in the first month of pregnancy?
A close friend of mine thinks she may be pregnant, but she wont know if she has missed a period because her method of birth control only gives her 4 periods a year. She has never been into drugs or alcohol but in the past month she has done cocaine, mushrooms, and a lot of binge drinking. I don’t need to hear about how stupid all that is and how she shouldn’t have done it or had unprotected sex in the first place (because I know, and so does she) but how would that effect a baby in the first month of pregnancy? Is there even a chance for a normal child if she has quit everything now that she knows she may be affecting another person as well as herself?

She can try the quick pregnancy test they sell in every drugstore and know for sure if she’s pregnant or not.
And to the best of my knowledge there are not lingering effects to drugs.

there is a slim chance that the cocaine MAY HAVE A SLIGHT affect. But i recomend goign completely clean and eat healthy and exsorsize.
Okay
yes, she should absolutely stop doing it now that she knows…actually she should do it for herself first and foremost.
but…while it could have injured the fetus already…the chances grow drastically each and every time she does it. there is a chance the baby could be perfectly normal…
the human body, even a fetus is very resiliant to a lot of things…but…cannot keep repairing itself if it’s attacked over and over again.
and yes…there is a chance…actually, a very good chance she may have a perfectly normal child.
Yes, she has a chance for the child to be normal and healthy, (a very good chance, actually!) but she needs to do 2 things immediately:
1. Take a home pregnancy test
2. STOP the partying right now
first off she needs to know if she is pregnant. then everything she takes into her body will have an amplified effect on the unborn fetus.
She should go see a doctor. Even if she didn’t miss a period because they’re once every 4 months, a test should detect pregnancy hormones in her urine or blood stream. Im not sure what effects drugs and alcohol has on the possible embryo are, but even if she’s not pregnant, doing drugs and binge drinking is very harmful and potentially fatal. She should see a counsellor too, because a sudden change from sober and clean to binge drinking and drugs is a cry for help, and there’s definately something else going on in her life that’s bothering her if she’s using all of a sudden.
I’d be there for her and try to be understanding. Really only a doc can tell her for sure what the risks are in her particular situation, as her health background also comes into play. I wish you and your friend good luck in this.
if she’s pregnant its possible that she may have some complications with the baby. but i’ll just let you know, i’m a diabetic with poor control (not poor by what i eat ect i eat really well) and before i found out i was pregnant i was smoking and drinking ALOT and so far my baby is absolutly fine I’m 27 weeks and my docs are very happy with the health of the baby. so although she may have some problems she may not. i doubt she will, my sister friend did the same took drugs smoked drank grog and her baby is fine!! just have faith and cross ur fingers
will i had four kids and with my frist month i somke alot of weed and contiued to and i smoked cigarettes and my frist born came out 4lb 13 oz. i think it will affect the baby in alots of way because thats when the baby is devolving all it important body parts and blood system. but other than that my Kids are healthy
It might affect the baby, but as long as she is aware now and doing what she can now, she needs to put those ideas behind her. She is responding appropriately to information as she gets it. That is all she can do and it will probably be enough. It can be a haunting issue all through pregnancy, I have seen it many times and worry is a useless thing to do, wastes energy, puts focus in the wrong place. The more she can let go of it now and accept whatever will be, focusing on the strong probability that it will be fine, the better. She will come to love the baby when she feels it move around and that will help her accept also. Your support in staying positive is great.
If she is pregnant, it can lead to miscarriage in the early months of pregnancy.
Reading the link below though will definitly give you a lot more information on each think that can affect the baby.
There is always a chance for a normal pregnancy, but she would need to see her doctor and get ultrasounds and blood tests to make sure the fetus is okay
She should go to her doctor and get a blood pregnancy test done. If she is pregnant, tell her to be truthful about her drug use. That way, her doctor can monitor her extra-close and watch her baby for potential problems.
Alcohol is by far the worst drug she can do. The “Crack Baby” scare was all manufactured media hysteria without any basis in fact. People should have realized this when they started hearing about their adult behavior problems only a couple years after crack first hit the streets (no time for the crack babies to have grown up with the problems being said about them). Opiate use is not a danger to a fetus, with doctors regularly advising mothers to continue taking them rather than stressing the child through withdrawal symptom onset. Stimulants like amphetamines (methamphetamine, dexamphetamine, benzamphetamine) were widely prescribed years ago with no reports of abnormalities heard of either as well. Of course pot is harmless, despite the efforts of screaming hysterics who know nothing other than what they hear from other hysterics (true of the DEA in particular).
Remember. Alcohol is by far the worst thing one can do to a baby. Any good doctor will tell you this.
