Question by Lawrence: Am I an alcoholic or just young and having fun?
I’m 27 years old and drink heavily most Friday nights to the point that I feel totally shit most Saturdays. I do find it hard to miss a Friday out drinking although i make a point of having 2 weeks off alcohol every 3 months. I’m not sure if I find it hard to miss a weekend because i’m an alcoholic or just because i’m young and my social life revolves around bars, pubs, clubs etc. If I do stay in for the weekend I dont really have any urge to drink, even if there is alcohol in the house. I was getting concerned and went to see my doctor who says my drinking isnt dangerous that its unlikely that i’m an alcoholic. However I sought a second opinion and the doctor says I should refrain from ALL alchohol and that I had a problem. I look at other people my age and I seem to share the same drinking habits with them. Can we all be alcoholics?
K S, I disagree and would consider anyone aged 39 or under as young, 40-59 middled-aged and anyone over 60 as old. But then it depends on your perception. Maybe i should have put ‘young adult’ rather than young.

No, you are not an alcoholic. Of course by the time you start exhibiting alcoholic behavior, its too late. As long as you stay responsible it’s not a problem.
Some people are just anti-alcohol and so their personal opinion interferes with their professional opinion.
If you often can’t tell who the drunkest person at the party is it probably means you should cut back a little, but there’s nothing wrong with drinking as long is it doesn’t end with you in the hospital or in a drunk tank. Think of it this way, you could be an engineer.
I don’t think your alcoholic, when you wake up and want another to get over feeling so terrible is the bit to watch for.
Enjoy – but take care.
Your current 2 weeks off every three months is very disciplined.
