Question by xyzpdq w: Can vomiting cause broken blood vessles in your eyes?
I am concerned over my child’s behavior. He was out allnight and came home the next day with extremely blood shot eyes where the blood vessles were so severly broken that he looked like a vampire. It took weeks for it to clear up. He said that he had been drinking and that he vomited severly. I have never heard of that before (vomiting until it breaks blood vessles in your eyes – aka dry heaves). I’m starting to think it was “the choking game” or the hanging thing people do to get off. Hey, I’m trying to figure out what I can do to get some help for my kid. Can vomiting cause blood vessles in your eyes to rupture so badly? It’s a serious thing, either way. I don’t want to lose my kid to alcoholism. I dont’ want to lose my kid to a belt around his neck in a closet. I didn’t look for the signs of bruises around his neck but I’m on the lookout for both 1) choking 2) alcoholism.

yes severe vomiting can make the blood vessels in your eyes break open.

i suffered horrible allergies as a kid and was often reduced to dry heaving because of it. Had this happen to me a few times but never to “vampire eyes”. If he’s drinking to that extreme, worry regardless. I actually vomited myself a cracked rib once from the muscle spasms. Choking game? Whatever happened to botlle caps or Chug-a-lug.?
why didn’t you take him to see a Ophthalmologist if concerned
the eye MD could have given you a possible diagnosis
If he is vomiting profusely it can cause broken blood vessels because it is sometimes violent. But it is not common! I would definitely keep an eye out for telltale signs of choking and alcoholism. Also just vomiting would not cause his blood vessels to remain like that for two weeks something else is going on. I would contact your doctor and ask about this. Good luck I hope your son will be okay.
Yes capillaries can break in eyes if after heavy intake of alcohol one vomits with violent bout of reflexes. Alcohol raises blood pressure & violent vommiting makes spikes of blood pressure causing broken capillaries. But you can’t eliminate choking also.
yes
My dad had blood red eye(s), and it looked scary, if not terrifying.
My mom had talked about if he ate green peppers it would help. His lasted for at least a couple weeks, and he does not drink.
When my mom passed away and we did CPR on her, I remember her eyes looking bloodshot afterwards, but not the same way that my dad’s had. His had looked almost bloody.
It would not surprise me if vomiting could have done it to your child, but there are other health reasons for broken eye vessels.
Yes very severe vomiting can cause blood vessels in his eyes to break and turn red. Also dehydration after the drinking binge, poor diet, and not enough rest could also contribute. Does you son know how dangerous excessive drinking is for him? Try to find some support groups on line to get more answers or someone who has had experience with that hanging thing they might be able to give you advise on how to detect your son if he is doing that and how to help. Maybe he should be put into a treatment program.
