Question by ajsaxton: Is prohibition against any and all alcoholic beverages for young people the best way to prevent alcohol abuse?
No. This indirectly encourages abuse by making drinking appear to be a mark of maturity or an initiation into adulthood.

Best answer:

Answer by Andre’ F
No, because the more you keep telling someone they can not do something, the more they are going to get curious as to the why. I say try to be honest and explain to them what it is all about. Take the person to an area and let them witness what they will become. To put it mildly prohibition may actually encourage alcoholism because of a miss-communication on a bad day that may lead to wait till I get older. Although, some people never look at it that way.

Question by Jessica: What can I do to help my friend in this time?
She just got out of a mild rehab for alcohol. It’s not my place to do things for her. She is almost 30. She’s a big girl and she can make her own decisions. I don’t want to “step on her toes” or anything. I just want to be there for my friend. What can I do to help?

Best answer:

Answer by swt_kristinaa
Hmmm.. keep her company for a while. Go out shopping and stay from anything that would have the presence of alcohol. Its your job to be there as a friend, but her job to work on her self

Question by cloudhop23: Are the ego deflating steps in Alcoholics anonymous useful for someone with severe low self esteem?
My aunt is a sponser for AA, (which is scary for me since she has a very narcissictic and controlling, abusive personality). She told me to try working the 12 steps to help me get over my rape and captivity as a child.
(I don’t drink BTW)
But I don’t see how deflating my ego and dwelling on all my faults is helpful in recovering from this?
I mean, I do that everyday anyways and its a pattern I’m trying to break, it just doesn’t make sense to me.

Best answer:

Answer by The VN was worth it
If you can see clearly that this is pointless for you…and I agree that it is, then you are one tiny step away from saying, I will no longer feel bad about this. I didn’t do anything wrong and what happened to me didn’t change the important parts of who I am.

And then never think about it again.

Best answer:

Answer by Chef Orville
It depends on the family situation. If children see their parents drinking, they’re going to assume that it’s okay to drink. The parents must tell their children that it’s wrong. Or they could just not drink in front of the kids.
