Question by : Mental issues in toddlers exposed to cocaine?
My husband had two kids with his Ex-wife before I met him. Unfortunately these two children were exposed to their mothers drug use while he was deployed. She did cocaine while she was pregnant with the youngest and the oldest child was seen by a friend high on cocaine, when he was three. The state did intervene and she was denied access to her children.
I was wondering what problems this might pose in the development in the children, mentally. The oldest can not remember something that you tell him from one minute to the next. They do not have symptoms for autism, or ADD, but the development is obviously behind. I have been able to teach the oldest (he’s four now) his colors, how to count, and his letters, but he still forgets until I remind him.
What can I do to help development? How do I get them tested to see what they need if they have any issues? I don’t even know where to begin so I hope that someone on here can point me in the right direction. Thank you for any information.

There are many issues that may and do arise during the development of a child from the mothers use of cocaine (or any over used drug) during pregnancy and exposure afterword. Many babies are also born addicted and go through withdrawal in the hospital……The worse would come from needle use in which Hepatitis B & C can be passed on to the fetus, which should have been checked for while in the hospital. Some behaviours may not show up for years but here are some common early ones. A child may have sleep or appetite issues, delusions, mood swings, paranoia, behavioural and social problems, memory problems, nervousness, agitation, hyperactivity, to mention a few. There can also be problems arising in the kidneys, heart or digestive system. I think having a specialist give them a good medical would ease your present concerns. I think it’s also important to remember that our bodies have great healing potential and many children that have been born to active addicts go on to live very healthy lives. I only know this because I have gone through it also with 2 children in my immediate family, exposed to marijuana. One has ADD, both have learning, social and behavioural problems directly related to this drug use. Your children are very fortunate to have such a caring mom and I’m sure whatever comes, you will help them to overcome anything..Take care

Question by Songbird: Would a baby who’s father is a meth addict have a child with small attention span?
My sister recently had a baby and her boyfriend has been addicted to meth for 6 years-supposedly he is clean now-but their baby is 6 months old and he has ZERO attention span! You have to be constantly walking or bouncing him to ease him. He has a really bad temper for a 6 month old-just wondering if this has anything to do with it?

i dont think so…the father only passed on genes…while the mother can pass on whatever toxins are in her system to the child. It’s either A) genetics or B) from your sister not doing what she was suppose to do while pregnant. Sorry i dont’ mean to accuse but that’s why doctor’s make such a huge deal about what a mother consumes while pregnant. The first 3 months are the most important months to a childs mental and physical development. If she didn’t find out that she was pregnant later in her first trimester and was drinking, smoking, eating unhealthy for those first few weeks that could affect the child’s developmental progress.

yes you should worry! theres always drugs at raves! especially ecstacy. if i were you, i wouldn’t let him go.
if he does go, he needs to becarful.
You are already dehydrated by the time you first start to feel thirsty so he needs to drink water before. sometimes people get so dehydrated, they drink too much water and flush certain things that they need out of their system. which is dangerous. i had a friend who died because of it. and yes, its possible to drink too much.

2) Take breaks from dancing.
3) Remember the inaccuracies of drug labeling.
4) Know the signs and symptoms of toxicities. Even experienced Emergency doctors have trouble identifying drug overdoses when multiple drugs are used. So if you start to feel strange or are not sure stay with a friend and get some help.
5) Avoid alcohol. Raves are supposed to be alcohol free but many people drink before they get to the rave.
6) Have a buddy. This decreases the chances of having problems.

I’ve recently moved out of my massive semi detached house in this lovely rich leafy suburb/area of Manchester because I couldn’t afford to live there and I have traded it with a house in Birmingham as Birmingham was a lot lot cheaper got to Birmingham/Brum and the house is some terraced house, a inner city street of rows of terraced houses boarded up litter on street ethnic black/asians gangs of youths hanging on streets and drug dealing going on in the park at the back of my house so many needles and syringes scattered around there on a daily and weekly basis and I have to go there to catch the bus to go to work in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham and I cant afford to move but I hate it here seriously is there any other places I can live anyone able to give me some help and infomation thank you.

Sorry to hear about your friend, but it is very true that drugs distroy a persons life. I have a friend (Like you) that once THOUGHT he was going to be robbed one night, and he has never been the Outgoing Normal person since…Since his Doctor/quack, told him to take these drugs ….Its a sad and long story, kinda like yours…
It realy sickens me that people think a drug will help them. And that the Drug companys are ALWAYS pushing drugs on normal everyday people.
When I get depressed about something, the last thing I want is a DRUG company telling me to Take this pill. Ah, no, I know how to deal with it, take your pill and shove it up your ass!

I really have no vices, except, after my wife had an affair a few years ago, I decided to do the same, except I can’t stop. These women feed my ego by telling me how good-looking, “big” and good in bed I am, and they are better than my wife in practically every way except I wouldn’t want anyone else to be the mother of my kids, 12 and 9.
