Question by : Children with alcoholic/substance abusing parents?
I’m doing my research paper on the adverse effects of having parents who are substance abusers. I’d like some feedback from the community. So far I’ve talked about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, but I also need to talk about short term effects and long term effects.
For short term I have periodic behavorial changes, as well as changing grades. What else have you, as a child with an alcoholic parent, experienced short term?
What about long term? Have you developed depression, trust issues, etc.? Are you more grounded and serious, or goofy and clownish?
Please give me any information about this subject. Thanks so much!

neither of my parents drink and i plan to do the same
Well, my mother wasn’t an alcoholic, she was a heroin addict.
There were many short term effects: if i failed in school she had no reaction. she never cried, she was cold hearted. i never saw her. money started running low.
and i was bounced from 9 foster homes/shelters within an 8 month period time. she’s clean now and a totallllllyyy different person. if i can be any more assistance, answer one of my questions, with a question. lol doesn’t have to be about my question.
Well, my mom’s an alcoholic. I don’t know when my problems started, really. In a way I think my problems have nothing to do with my mom’s problem. One thing I do think is related however, is my need to protect everyone. With my friends I feel like I’m the parent, and I never take risks. For as long as I can remember I’ve promised myself I would never touch alcohol. Now I’m thirteen and I’ll pull out a beer from the fridge when it’s midnight and I can’t sleep. I think my problems are just mine, and even if my mom was different I’d still have them, but some of the more minor things might have been triggered by her.
