They’ve given a bad name to people who paint their entire bodies and attend sporting events half-naked.

Department of Education. Straight Up: Episode 1. Academy award winning actor Lou Gossett, Jr. and young TV star Chad Allen (NBC’s Our House) appear in this story about a boy named Ben who faces peer pressure to use alcohol and drugs. Creative Commons license: Public Domain Drugs are chemicals that change the way a person’s body works. You’ve probably heard that drugs are bad for you, but what does that mean and why are they bad? Medicines Are Legal Drugs If you’ve ever been sick and had to take medicine, you already know about one kind of drugs. Medicines are legal drugs, meaning doctors are allowed to prescribe them for patients, stores can sell them, and people are allowed to buy them. But it’s not legal, or safe, for people to use these medicines any way they want or to buy them from people who are selling them illegally. Cigarettes and Alcohol Cigarettes and alcohol are two other kinds of legal drugs. (In the United States, adults 18 and over can buy cigarettes and those 21 and over can buy alcohol.) But smoking and excessive drinking are not healthy for adults and off limits for kids. Illegal Drugs When people talk about the “drug problem,” they usually mean abusing legal drugs or using illegal drugs, such as marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine, LSD, crystal meth and heroin. This is so much better high. I’ve watched it stoned and not. While I’m stoned, it’s funny and inspirational. While sober, it’s just propaganda
I watched this in middle school
and fyi maybe kids should be learning to not trust creepy dressed black guys telling them to get into some sketchy looking elevator he calls “the fate elevator”…just saying…

HAHAH! They showed this to us in elementary school. We were all being polite about it, but we were laughing at it the whole time…Hehehhe….
Thanks for posting this!!
oh wow i have not seen this video since the fifth grade and even then i was smoking pot regularly please half of the ideas in this video seem like they came from the mind of a pothead
I, myself, have never used pot. However, as a psychology major in college, and the psychopharmacology classes I had to take, I would say, with confidence, and objectivity, that there really isn’t a lot of scientific data to support most of the claims made in this film. Not once in the film was the illegality of either of the drugs in question mentioned, and that, technically, is what can put a real damper on a kid’s future. A criminal record, a urine test showing up positive, etc.
The fact that these videos are still being shown in public school classes, decades after they were made, go to show just how out of touch adults and teachers are with what kids and adolescents respond to.
I havent seen this video since I was in elementary school years and years ago.
@raypeezy this is brain washing material…i heard this song 11 years ago in 5th grade and sing it until this day …i even tried to recreate it from memory( i make music) crazy!
What is Mr. Manilow’s vocal range? Barry tone!
I was shown this video in the 5th or 6th grade. All it did for me was educate me on which drugs are the best……….SERIOUSLY. This grass is great sue!!! Smokes??? That’s all you got?? Yeah, pot is waaaayyy better. I was so naive about this stuff at that age because I wasn’t subjected to it until…. hhmmmmm, yeah this video. Also, all we did was make fun of it from then on and even now today. It’s mostly trash that should never be shown to children, leave the no drugs shit to the parents.
@tyrus95 NICE! LOL… Every year my students watch this on VHS. They laugh at the size of the “tape” and almost need coaching as to how to insert it into the player! Today we went on a field trip and needed to take an elevator and some children sang “… just take the elevator up…” Ahhh, kids. LOL!
