Question by Dancer16: FOR COLLEGE KIDS: alcohol and drugs because they like it or because everyone else is doing it?
do the college kids who smoke and drink and do other drugs often at social events do it because they like the feelings (including the negatives such as about to vomit, dizzy, lightheaded, not remembering what happened, no control over bodily functions at times ect) or because everyone else does it and they don’t want to feel like a loser or left out?
i feel only some like it and the rest just follow suit. what do you think?

Usually to experiment, kids are fascinated by things they don’t know, College is the basic introduction to this world. So I would say normal for the most part.
it’s a mix of peer pressure and pleasure gained. though i personally never got into drugs or alcohol (damn pharmacology class put me off them…)
I think its a misconception that society has that every college kid drinks and does drugs. I go to SDSU (which was at one point the #1 party school in America) and yes there are people who drink and do drugs but the majority are mature adults who attend class and hold down jobs like people out of college do.
I drink maybe once a month, generally because I love a good glass of imported wine.

I am a college kid of 22 and when I go out and drink, I enjoy it.
If people do drink to get drunk for the feeling then it is because they enjoy that feeling not the negative ones you mentioned. No one enjoys the negative. Most college kids I know know their limits though where those negative effects don’t happen.
The only thing that has happened to me when I was drunk that you mentioned above is vomiting and that has not happened in a very long time. Every time my friends and I go out drink, we don’t always get drunk.
I honestly believe people drink because it is just a social thing to do. I suppose you could distort that as a fear of being left out, but at my age we are drinking because we want the feeling and we aren’t drinking because we don’t want to feel left out either.
Maybe a lot of freshmen and sophomore drink for your reasons.
i think majority was followers, they just do whatever their friends doing.
alcohol can be release tension but just don’t over take it. The most important is always say NO to drug, it is a bad and harmful thing.
First of all, the vast majority of college students are 18 or older, which would make them adults, not kids.
College students who drink/use drugs do so for the same reasons other people do. Some people drink/use drugs because they enjoy it, others do it to fit in, and there are many other reasons too. Why do you find it any different when college students do it?
