Be awake when kids get home.
Be involved in their lives. Know their friends, know where they go.
Teach them to be responsible. not by lectures, but by your own actions. Too many times I see parents have a drink or two at a resteraunt and drive home.. BAD EXAMPLE to teach kids.
As far as binge drinking, and light drug usage, I trust my child to do the right thing. I have had open discussions with her, not simply lectures, but encourageing questions, conversations and two way communications.
Be open with your kids. Let them know you would not punish them if they called you to pick them up, and drive them home. Kids who feel like they need to ‘hide’ their actions out of fear of punishment, will not be willing to call for help when they need it. They would be more likely to get behind the wheel of a car, and attempt to drive themselves.
Make sure they ALWAYS have enough cash on them for a cab ride home. EXPECIALLY IF SHE IS ON A DATE. There are reasons other than drinking, that might make her need a ride home.
I dont fool myself. I know kids will drink. My daughter knows that I know there will be a time when she will drink. I dont use definative terms like ‘NEVER’. I understand curiosity, for I too was once a child. I know the mistakes I made, and know what should of been done.
The best way to prevent them from driving drunk is to be there, be sober and drive for them. A designated driver can make all the difference in the world.
I can’t help you with the binge drinking, except to say that you can set an example to them by not drinking yourself.
