Question by Ken E. Lamars: How did Tony Stark beat alcoholism & then what did he do next?
I use to read the comics as a kid, last thing I remember was him delivering that girls baby in the hall during a blizzard.

Hey Rusty its Iron Man not Super Man lol.
He tried to save the mother and baby but they dies of exposure during the blizzard. (I think it was his kid, too.) That’s what made him hit rock bottom and he gave up drinking. He got some bank to loan him money and he started a new business (I think that was called Circuits Maximus) and became Iron Man again. Jim Rhodes had been Iron Man during this time. (For example, it was Jim Rhodes that went to Secret Wars I with the Beyonder, not Tony.)
After that was the Armor Wars, where Stark realized that a lot of his proprietary circuits had been stolen and used by criminals to develop their own armored suits, so he tracjed them down and used a special EMP generator to burn out all the circuits that were stolen from him. (He used new ones that were immune to the EMP.)
Problem is, he attacked som Federal Agents who were wearing armored suits that did NOT us technology stolen from him, so Iron Man became a wanted criminal.
Jim Rhodes helped him fake his own death. The Federal Government had some special missiles made (I think by Stane International, which used to be Stark International until Obadiah Stane took it over). They attacked Iron Man who tried to flee by hijacking a helicopter flown by Rhodes (and Stark, who was supposedly in the chopper.) They couldn’t fire because he now had hostages.
But then Iron Man flew out of the copter because it’s speed was a lot slower than his own. They hit him with the missiles and he fell. When he hit the ground, the armor split open and there were about ten pints of bloos spread around, which meant that he had to be dead, nobody could have survived losing that much blood.
Stark and Rhodes tricked them. Stark took off the armor in the copter, they put in bags of blood meant for emergency transfusions (all Stark’s blood type, of course!) and sent the armor out by remote control to be destroyed.
IN those days people still thought that Iron Man was Stark’s employee, Stark ‘s bodyguard. Stark made a public appearance saying that the ‘next’ man selected tobe Iron Man would be specially security screeenewd and psychologically tested to make sure he would never ‘go berserk’ like that and never ‘try to steal the armor for his own uses’ again.
Later, when Stane was revealed to be behind the Armor Wars, there was a grand battle, and Stane committed suicide. His helmet was torn off and he set his own repulsors to ‘vaporize; and aimed them at himself. This way, there was no body left, and since Stane was not confirmed dead and could not appear in court, Stark’s money was permanently tied up in court until seven years passed and Stane could be declared legally dead. So in another sense, Tony had to start over from scratch and build his fortune again.
Then, a little before Civil War, Tony was with some girlfriend. He had admitted to her he was Iron Man and she was trying to convince him to give it up because it was so dangerous. By now he had a suit of armor that was light enough to be kept in a briefcase and with the touch of a button it would fly apart and form around him so he didn’t have to take time to ‘put it on’. He did it in public to save the puppy of a kid that was about to get run over when it ran out into the street. He said it was because he lost a puppy as a kid, and he didn’t want the kid to have to go through that grief.
Why they didn’t immediately arrest him for faking his own death earlier, I don’t know. But that’s the comic book world for you. Then I guess he revealed his identity permanently during Civil War and Stark is now the head of SHIELD to replace the aging (ever-so-slowly) Nick Fury. When Rhodes wears his suit, he is War Machine.
(Not to be confused with Steel, John Henry Irons from DC comics, who wears an armor suit with the Superman S on it, or Jean Valley, who substituted for Batman during Knightfall and wore an armored suit that could fly and fire Batarangs ou tof the arms.)
Whew! Years of comic book history in a few minutes!
