The remarkable accomplishment of a great humanist, José Antonio Abreu, who dedicated his life to set up the ‘Sistema’ in 1975, an extraordinary music and social project which has been running in Venezuela in an attempt to transform the lives of the nations poorest children. It has been using classical music to tackle the social problems of a country where 60% of the population live below the poverty line. By offering free instruments and tuition through a network of after-school centres all over the country, the Sistema has kept thousands of children away from the drugs, alcohol and gang-related violence of the streets and has led to the creation of 30 professional orchestras in a country that had only 2 before it started. Currently, 275000 children attend the Sistemas schools and many of them play in one of the 125 youth orchestras. At the pinnacle of the system stands the Simón BolÃvar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela under its music director Gustavo Dudamel who is himself a product of the Sistema and is also the musical director for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

“The World Values Survey has consistently shown Venezuelans to be among the happiest people in the world, with 55% of those questioned saying they were “very happy”.” Venezuelans have gone through hell and back more than once and are a resilient people and im more than proud to be one

@chesval Fox News Parrot. Sad. Have you looked lately at the pitiful state of America’s kids?
José Antonio Abreu inspires me..
wonderful and amazing project not only for the children and their teachers but also for the families who can be proud.
@reinux
Too late it has already happened. These kids will have children of their own, some day in their future, and just imagine what they will produce, and how Venezuela will become a cultural superpower.
Plans are to triple music for poor children to one million students. A symphony orchestra in each village in Venezuela.
the next music renaissance is happening in venezuela.
i need to go to venezuela someday.
The work of Abreu started many years before there was an American hating president. As a matter of fact Abrae is a doctor in Economics and his work has nothing to do with Politics. The work he does is actually a good way of integrating poor children into a higher educated society and preserving capitalism. Unfortunately there were not more people like him sooner in that country to prevent what happened there. Great work maestro and god bless your work and these Venezuelan Children.
This is one of my favorite videos and – again – I cried – when I watched it today…….
It’s my drug… all I want for my life..
@luverlything That is the way I remember Venezuelans..people with lots of passion for anything they did.. Outstanding!!!
I’m speechless. The best policy against social class inequalities ever. Artistic education is the best investment ever. Bravo Venezuela. From a sociologist researching social inequalities.
Remarkable for an American hating dictatorship! But so were the athletes trained under Hitler and communist Russia and their own brand of “the system”, to make it appear that socialism is the world’s cure for, and antidote to capitalism. No wonder Scotland (the land of people tracking spies), and Canadian socialist transplants to the US (and itschurches) would look to this secular humanist type of model of music training and not see the problem. Socialism has no place in America or its churches.
Mr Abreu must get the Humanities or peace Nobel Prize! He has done a lot thing for young people to make them to stay far from the drugs and he teach them music. they are very talent musicians but they do not have much money to go to musical school.
