Question by Cozza: How would the presence of cocaine in the blood stream effect a suicide investigation?
More specifically: if some guy committed suicide and it was absolutely obvious to the police that it wasn’t foul play, how would the presence of cocaine in his blood stream and the discovery of a small amount of it found among his possessions effect the inquiry?
The reason I need this information is because I’m writing a screenplay for a movie I’m going to shoot. The guy wasn’t high when he jumped, so the drugs have nothing to do with his death. His parents are dead, he has no wife or children, no friends and he doesn’t work.
Would the police not close the case until they found out where the drugs came from? Would they launch a separate inquiry? Would they not care because the drugs are irrelevant to his death?
Thank you very much.

They would close the case after doing small investigation of the evidence. The investigators would have no problem as to justify this suicide after the medical examines rules suicide.
Good luck.
I do not agree with part of your statement
“the guy wasn’t high when he jumped, so the drugs have nothing to do with his death”
If you know anything about drugs and addiction, especially cocaine, the depression and paranoia last days or weeks after you stop using.
The example you give is a man with no family or friends, perhaps no hope, and he has even run out of drugs which he is using to maintain the status quo.
You said the drugs were irrelavent to his death…. I am glad that you are a writer and not a police officer or social worker.
Good luck to you on your incredible insight
overdose is possible and yes they do have to investigate the drugs use but that is up the detectives to handle all of this
Police deal in absolute facts. If the drugs had nothing to do with his death, they’d file it away and move on. They could spends months running down where the drugs come from and they don’t have the time for that. They are more likely to catch the supplier on the street involving others.
the drugs would most likely be noted as present in the bloodstream or on the scene and wouldnt play a part in the cause of death unless the levels in the blood were high enough to cause heart failure. you can mention the fact that there was cocaine, but the cops probably wouldnt track down the dealer.
wouldn’t care
