Question by Amber W: Is Binge Eating a real disorder?
I had lost 50lbs and then I gained 20 back when I started binging. At first dieting was just making halthier choices for me, then I became really die-hard about it and was really stirct. Well, it worked for a time — but then I just…cracked, and with all the stress of my strict regime and everything else in life, I started binging in secret. and I gained 20lbs — it’s so embarrassing I cannot even describe it. I keep resolving to never binge again, but then I do. It’s happening OVER AND OVER. I’ve begun to think I am fooling myself by thinking I can do this alone, which makes me wonder about a therapist or something. Because I’m a teen it will be difficult for me to talk to my parents about this to get help, but before I do I want to know if this is of serious concern.
Is binging a real disorder? Or am I just making excuses for myself?
thanks…

Binge eating is a real disorder. Some people eat enormous amounts of food when they are stressed (me included). Others eat when they are happy, sad, or feeling any strong emotion. It is very real, and you are not alone. For some binge eaters, life can revolve around food. If you feel that it is out of control, then you might consider contacting a therapist. Good luck.
binge eating in an eating disorder! only you know yourself well enough to tell in it is becoming a mental issue with you. for one, you are eating in private, so it isn’t something you are “proud” of. . . trust me, you can get beyond this. eat with other people, control your portions and listen to your body, stop eating when you are full!! and if you can’t do that, then eat fruit or raw vegetables! Good luck to you. remember, your body is your machine! you have to treat it like you would a sports car that you really, really love!
I think you should talk to your parents about it, Im not sure how your diet was… maybe you didnt have a good diet, like the whole no carb diet things, thats dangerous, you need carbs for energy, if you did this type of diet, and then started binging on carbs, its a natural reaction because your body is starving for this nutrition. make sure your on a healthy diet, not a fasting diet, you have to find something you can live with and follow through on, just keep looking and there are people out there, that are nutritional experts that can help put you on a plan that will make your life a lot easier. hope that helps good luck, you can do it!
