Question by Bronwen Eats Forbidden Fruit: Is It My Imagination, Or Do A Lot Of Young Women Get Pregnant Soon After Getting Out Of Drug Rehab?
This came up recently when I was having dinner with some younger friends (early 20s). I made the comment that nearly every young lady (generally mid-to-late teens or very early 20s) that I know who has been in drug rehab has gotten pregnant really quickly after leaving their rehab program. Of the 8 or so girls I know who have been to rehab in the last few years, all but one was pregnant within about six months, and most were pregnant even faster than that. One of my dinner companions said that every single girl she knows who has been in rehab has been pregnant within a year of leaving rehab, and she knows a lot more girls who have been to rehab than I do.
I didn’t give it much thought at the time, but now I am wondering if maybe what they are thinking is if they have a baby, it will keep them off drugs?
What are your opinions?
I guess I should add that the girls who have been willing to discuss it with me admit that they were very careful about birth control before they went to rehab, but when I ask them about their birth control habits after rehab, they get kind of vague, and give nonsensical answers. For instance, one told me that it was “too much to think about.”
From the outside looking in, it really does appear to me that they actually want to get pregnant. All express surprise when they find out that they are, but all of them are determined to keep the baby right from the start, and I get the feeling that their “accidental” pregnancies are a little less accidental than they claim. I guess I am just trying to understand why the two seem to go together; get out of rehab, hurry and get pregnant.

Yes, I actually know 2 girls that have been. One ended up getting pregnant months after rehab but the other one went back into drugs again sadly.
Have not heard this as fact, but would not doubt it could be true….because the girls would obviously be vulnerable at that time to any guy’s attentions, to fill the void they had been trying to fill with drugs.
There is also the possibility of patients getting raped while in
rehab joints or psych joints….I KNOW that one is true…have heard some horror stories about that. Those places sometimes hire ex-cons to work for them, and there is little supervision of them, so they prey on the young, sick women there, while they have them drugged. Sick, huh? So, some of the women may find they are pregnant after getting out from one of those perverts.
That’s very interesting. In retrospect I have seen it occur many times (though I don’t personally know any drug addicts).
I’d like to know if there are any statistics on the subject.
There are a lot of young women (too young) getting pregnant period. But I think you theory is correct, they may feel it will keep them clean, and also thy get the idea that a baby is someone who will love them unconditionally, at a time when they may be feeling like huge screw ups. I think our emphaisis on sex ed and birth control is misguided. The need to get realistic education on parenthood. Realistically it is a hard hard job that you can never ever quit. Don’t they get that?
It shows that musical sages have it correct. Life really IS about sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Take one away, and one of the other two urges become insatiable. Stop the drugs, fill the void with unprotected passion. Stop the rock and roll, fill the void with the dulcet tones of marijuana inhalation emitting from your lips. Become celibate..and…well….become John Tesh. Heh. Sorry.
I can honestly say that very few habitual drug users I’ve known are introspective enough to think that having a baby will assist them in their self purification. I think it far more likely that orgasms or the pursuit thereof release endorphins that mimic drug use and lead to the side effect of pregnancy.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need my typing hand to finishing rolling this blunt.
Happy New Year Bronwen!
