Are you talking about children who are already alcoholics? An alcoholic is only concerned about getting the next drink. School, studies, attendance, alertness, etc. are not important. Failure is imminent. As for children of alcoholic parents, they may have trouble concentrating or staying awake because of fear, having been kept up all night by screaming drunks or fighting parents, etc. They're likely ashamed to have anyone over to their house because they never know what condition or mood the parents will be in, etc.

If you go to www.al-anon-alateen.org there are free pamphlets you can either download or have sent to you. One is a pamphlet for educators about alateen (a 12 step program for children of alcoholics). You can also call 1-888-4ALANON and get information. Al-Anon and Alateen books are also available in many local libraries. Good luck.
