Question by ♥♥Mrs SSG B♥♥: Question about children of alcoholic parents???
Its been proven that children of alcoholic parents have a significantly higer risk of also developing alcoholism. But what about children that were born to alcoholic parents initially, but then were adopted out to another family at a very very young age? Are they still at risk, even if they are adopted into a warm, nurturing, loving family with no alcohol abuse?
I don’t know what made me think of that. Neither of my parents have drinking problems, but my mother’s father was a very abusive drunk. I’m just wondering if the risk is still present when the child has not been subjected to the behavior.
Thanks!

I don’t think they have established with certainty whether this tendency is environmental or genetic (or possibly a combination of both).
What do you think? Answer below!

good question….some experts say yes the risk is high, others say no…..in any family regardless how warm and loving there will be times of discord….it will comes down to coping skills versus taking up drinking
In my experience with this issue, I have found that it is more environmental and teaching within the home on the subject, that will determine this. The jury is still out in the research whether alcoholism is hereditary vs a combination of both factors. I would say, it is not a worry, unless, the child demonstrated a tendency toward an addictive behavior, whether it be alcohol, drugs or any other kinds of addictions or obsessive behavior.
Hi Mrs. SSGB,
Well, many children born to alcoholic parents may possibly have symptoms or effects from what’s called ‘ fetal alcohol syndrome.’
The brain, psyche, and actions of any substance abuser or addicted person are affected by the ‘sympathetic ganglia’. (transmitter receptors acting as enablers in the brain)
Genetically, children may possibly inherit some of the FAS symptoms or effects, and a risk factor.
However, a person’s surroundings really will greatly influence their behaviour patterns. Anyone with a stable and warm environment will usually fare better than those who did not.
best wishes
