Question by Emily P: Rehab or mental institutions for teens today, for a book?
i got an idea for a book a little while ago from a dream i had (and it has always kinda interested me) and i need to know kinda how mental institutions or rehab centers for teens would be run today. not for like addiction to drugs/alcohol, but for like anorexia and cutting (those are the things the 2 main girls suffer from) like what routines would they have to do daily, what would they be allowed to have/not have, what activities could they do, schoolwise what goes on, visitors, could they leave? like on trips would that happen? i don’t know much about them and i want to make it accurate. if someone has their own experience or just knows information from someone they know, or they just know a real place or a site that can point me in the right direction i would really appreciate it.
to Soylent Twilight Is Buffy FanFic, i never said i wouldn’t do something like that. i live in a small town where like i said i have no idea where one is, i am asking for some feedback or to point me in the right direction for a site of a place. what i do with that information is my business. if you don’t have anything to give me, don’t make rude comments instead. i have read that book, it dated. i want some information about places today.

Anorexic would probably be fed on drips, if she refuses to eat. They’d have a lot of psychiatric help. Parents would be encouraged to visit, unless they were the source of the problem.

A good book about rehab would probably be the book Impulse. You can find it in most bookstores, or in your library.
get out of the house go visit one. Yes this would be actual work, something real authors do when researching a setting. Something which is invaluable for making a book good, rather than a bunch of schlock.
Ken Kesey wrote One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest after working in a mental hospital, and you’d write you book based on looking at a web site of a rehab center? At least you won’t have to wonder why your book is never as great as his is.
You should read “Girl…Interrupted”. It will give you an idea of how they are run. I’ve never worked in that form of program but I did work as a counselor at a Group Home. I know they have to attend therapy sessions both private and group. Many places have school on campus but some allow people to go to a regular school and they are picked up by staff after wards. There are outings, usually on weekends. They can receive visitors bu only once the visitors are approved by Social Workers, resident psychologists and director of program. They would have chores and receive an allowance based on how cooperative they were during the week. It’s a point system thing. So unless the kids you are writing about are rich and are in a private facility, this is generally how one is ran. They also have check-ins with their social workers or attorney at least every 2 weeks. there is usually a schedule that needs to be followed which lists the times for getting up, meals, school, chores and free time. Phone calls can be made on the pay phone at the facility.
