Question by Desiree: Is dedicating ones life to religion worse than dedicating ones life to drug addiction?
Drug addiction typically only causes damage to one person’s life – the drug addict. But religion causes damage to not just the religion addict but to almost everyone they contact throughout their life, especially their children, right? So in most cases, it would be better for humanity if religious people lived their lives in a drug induced haze rather than to have them screwing up their children’s minds, spreading their ridiculous beliefs to other people and voting for corrupt politicians who use religion to gain power, right?

Question by Harry Beiber, Marriage Psychic: How can I replace my sex addiction with just a plain, ordinary porn or alcohol addiction?
I really have no vices, except, after my wife had an affair a few years ago, I decided to do the same, except I can’t stop. These women feed my ego by telling me how good-looking, “big” and good in bed I am, and they are better than my wife in practically every way except I wouldn’t want anyone else to be the mother of my kids, 12 and 9.

Anyway, I want to trade in this sex addiction for some other, more accepted addiction. Suggestions?

Question by Laura G: How do I ensure my kids have relationship with their dad while protecting them from his drug addiction?
I am divorced from a man who has a drug problem, cocaine. He has had this addition for over ten years and can’t seem to quit. He is a functioning user & goes on binges probally once a week, but in between does hold a job etc. But he does disapear overnight for two days or so. I did not know about the problem until I was pregnant with 2nd child & left & got divorced. He sees them regulary but supervised visits per the court until he tests drug free. The problem is my daughter is now 7 & wants to spend overnights with him etc. I have to keep making excuses on why she can’t, but instead I think she feels abandoned by him & I worry about her lack of fatherly figure. I am remarried & she has a great stepdad. Is that enough? I am worried about her safety to let her stay with him. My 3 year is still too young to understand. My ex just can’t seem to quit though. What do I tell her? Am I doing the wrong thing? Do I tell her the truth?

Question by singlewideslim: How to understand violence and addiction, nature or nurture?
Is there any real basis for there being a genetic predisposition towards aberrant behavior? Can criminality be understood outside the context of of environment? I have heard that violent criminals inside prisons are more likely to have a genetic or chromosomal disorder that makes them more likely to be violent criminals. But these same criminals almost all have something horrible (abuse, molestation, and so on) in their backgrounds too. I have also heard that plenty of people have these genetic violence markers, but don’t become violent if they were raised in a normal, healthy environment. Of course plenty of people come from horrible and abusive backgrounds and grow to be normal healthy adults. What about addiction? Everyone that has a glass of wine doesn’t become an alcoholic, but some do. Children of addicts are more likely to be addicts themselves, but is that genes or environment?

Best answer:

Answer by Chris Fox
I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the stories of ‘Genie’ or the Wolfboy, but those are prime examples of nature compared to nurture. Genie, for one, was completely healthy, but was deemed mentally challenged due to her not being given a childhood life of nurture and love.

I believe there is no such gene, and that human nature is completely endowed upon us by our parents/role models/teachers/community etc.

Question by amber w: Proof of ex’s addiction to porn/sex used in court to gain custody of children?
Me and my husband are currently seperated and will be divorcing after i give birth to our second child. I have proof that he meets random pple online for sex. I went onto his email and found that he had a profile on xxxcupid.com and it had his username and password so i went to it and found him handing out his phone number to numerous women to meet up for sex. I printed ALL of the messages out and also an email where a woman sent him naked pictures. I knew he had a porn addiction, but i didnt know it got as bad as actually meeting pple for sex.
Anyways, will that evidence in court help me to gain full custody of my daughter and son-on-the-way? I do not want to keep him from his children, as he is great with his daughter and loves her very much, I just don’t want them spending the night with him until they are old enough to speak and tell me what’s going on.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
8/17/10
thanks to everybody who had useful input. and to the rest of u who think that this all is being done out of “spite” then u must not have children. i don’t care about the fact that he loves porn and sex, but i will not NOT let my kids be put in that environment. like i said im NOT tryin to keep him from his kids, im protecting them. some of you guys are so dumb, read the whole statement before you pass judgements on pple. and if ur answer is not pertaining to wat i really asked…..gfy, thanks.

Question by bestos22: In this world of videogames, impossible to keep kids from falling into addiction?
nephew is 4.. plays Halo and Spider man all day, ,causehis father does it too. When they lived with us, i would play real life games, go ooutside and exercise with him, etc. but now he plays so much .
but still even if he didn’t go that road, he would find videogames later on and you know.. So any parents here who have kids and managed to not raise non videogame kids?

Best answer:

Answer by Derrrr
If the parents are addicted, then you can’t blame the kids. It’s easy if it’s your kid. Just do other things. I am into video games, but all of it will stop if/when I have kids. Some things are more important.

Question by blade: does a person who was sexually abused as a child develop an addiction to sex?
i am trying to understand the behaviours of someone close to me he admits to an adiction to sex, lacks confidence to find a partner, and often masturbates to porn, and visit escorts/ prostitutes. is this a normal behaviour for someone who has had to live with this pain, and what is the best cause of action to help him.

Best answer:

Answer by michele
The sequalae of childhood sexual abuse vary from person to person. It is possible that the current sexual behavior of your friend is directly (or indirectly) related to his chidhood trauma.

The best thing you can do for your friend is to encourage him to seek psychotherapy and provide literature for him (a good place to start might be the following books: The Courage to Heal and Victims No Longer). Help is available. He just needs to reach for it.

Best of luck to you,
~M~

p.s. You may find the book “Allies in Healing” helpful to you as you assist your friend in his journey.
