Question by : Children of alcoholics afraid to drink?
I’ve read a lot of research that says children of alcoholics are more likely to be alcoholics themselves and so forth. But my dad was (and still is) an alcoholic. I hate everything about alcohol. I hate how it makes people act different, i hate the way it smells. I’m 20 years old and have never been drunk. I’ve had a few drinks casually. But that still isn’t very often..I guess in a way I’m afraid to drink, and I really have no desire to. Anyone else feel this way? And why would children of alcoholics turn to alcohol after seeing what it has done to a parent?

Best answer:

Answer by bronzebabekentucky
I came from an alcoholic mom. Hate alcohol, don’t drink and I never will.
Alcoholism runs in the genes. It’s more likely that a child of an alcoholic will become an alcoholic, but we all have choices.

Question by stripedbook: what makes some people become full blown alcoholics?
I’m talking about people who shake and sweat if they don’t have their daily drinks. Why and how does this happen? can it happen to anyone at anytime? How can I avoid that. I like drinking, on the weekend, I’v been doing it for 20 years, but I just met a man tonight (in a hospital) who drank on weekends until his kids moved out of the house, and then he started drinking everynight, and then when he retired he drank every day AND night, and now he’s in the hospital suffering from alcoholism withdrawals.

Best answer:

Answer by MyMarriageRocks
I think becoming an alcoholic can be done by anybody. But I think some people have a much higher risk of becoming addicted. Not everyone who takes a drink becomes an alcoholic. Some people just have that as their weakness. Such as if there dad was one and the child saw him drinking and stumbling around then there is a good chance that he or she will become one as well. But also sometimes the person had a good upbringing and their parents never drank but the person becomes one anyways. It’s a very complex, confusing, frustarating thing. If some thing really tragic happens or someone close to them dies that can trigger the person to use alchol as a coping mechanism. Even though that doesn’t work and it makes things so much worse. My Father is an alcoholic has been for so long and his dad was an alcholic too (my g-pa) My brother and I started going down the road of drinking and then my brother realized he had to quit and he did. And was not addicted. I on the other hand became addicted to drugs (pain pills) and I was drinking pretty heavily for about 6months straight. I did quit and never had any withdrawls from the drinking. But my dad does if he tries to quit. So go figure ya know?? I do think it can happen to anyone at anytime but like I said some ppl are just more prone to it than others. Why it happens various reasons like I said…and how I suppose the body just gets so used to having that poison in its system that when the drinker quits the body just withdrawls..It is confusing I know. If you have just been drinking on the weekends for 20 years and you are not addicted then I say your chances are pretty slim. Unless something tragic or someone really close to you would pass then I hope you don’t use alcohol as a way to cope. Then you could very well end up an alcoholic. But that is doubtful. I don’t think there is anything wrong with you drinking on the weekends as long as you are responsible. Ok I hope I helped…I rambled on a lot Sorry about that…

Question by ret340: For children of alcoholics: as a child, was it better to have alcoholic living with you or away?
My husband gradually became a bad alcholic over the years. We’ve been separated 6 months & he asks to come home. I asked him to leave if he wouldn’t give up drinking & he chose to leave.
Here is my question: We have a 3 1/2 yr old son who adores his daddy. My husband is very good with him, BUT can’t be trusted to not drink while caring for him. I have to supervise when hubby interacts with our son.
Part of me wants to let him come home & be in my son’s life, but I think this could be bad for my son. I don’t want him growing up in an alcoholic home. My husband’s mother was a disgusting drunk & he really resents that his father never kicked her out!
If you have an alcoholic parent, are you glad this parent lived with you (or didn’t live with you) & which would have been best for you in the long run? I want to know how my son might feel about my decision to refuse to let my husband come home.
Hubby is verbally abusive to me, but not physically abusive. He’s NEVER mean to our son.
I guess I should have added this part: I have been in Alanon for 6 months and I have a family therapist I see every week. These are very helpful, but I wanted to know how adult children feel looking back on their lives with alcoholics parents.
My husband left because I told him to get into AA or another program and commit to recovery or get out of the house. He said he isn’t an alcoholic, won’t go into a program and he left.
I don’t really want him back after all I’ve been through, but I will work through this if it will be best for my son.

Best answer:

Answer by Handy R
He has to go to AA and help himself. I came from an alcoholic family and believe me, my father was never violent with us but seeing him be verbally abusive to my mom is just as much as if he did it to me. There are emotional scars from that. As does my mom. Scars from verbal are much more painful than physical ones. Wounds heal but you don’t forget. And when you think ur son doesn’t see it, trust me, he can feel the tension or hear it. I didn’t hate my mom for asking my father to get help. I was actually very proud of my mom. Tell him to get help. If he gets the help now, ur son can have happier memories w/o thinking his dad had been drinking beforehand. Do it for him and yourself. Good luck!

Question by outtahere: What are the personality traits of adult children of alcoholics?
I have a friend who seems pretty together but she does this hot/cold stuff and it’s crazy making. I know her mom is an alcoholic and her dad died when she was young. She also divorced about 6 years ago, kind of regrets doing that and now the guy just died at only 50. It’s hard sometimes being her friend because she seems to like me one minute and not the next. Not super mood swings but enough to make it a bit touchy. Advice?

Best answer:

Answer by bmac
Get out of the “friendship.” That’s my advice. My mother was an alcoholic, too and my father died when I was 5…….but I don’t use that as an excuse for bad behavior. She has no excuse, as an adult, for letting her childhood rule her life now. No excuse at all. She doesn’t deal with things and she is playing the victim and not taking responsibility for the things in her life. You can only blame your childhood on things that happen in your childhood. Once you become an adult, you can’t use that anymore. I assume she’s been an adult for a LONG time.

The next time she pulls that garbage with you, tell her,

“Get off the cross, we need the wood.”
