Question by happydawg: Do you believe alcoholism is hereditary?
My boyfriend has a serious drinking problem, but manages to hide it from everyone and he is very functional. Works for the railroad x 35 yrs, owns his own home, friendly to everyone. No outward signs. His family all acted so surprised when he nearly died from drinking about 3 yrs ago. The doctor asked if he drank and no one knew he did or would admit how serious it was. When I asked him if his dad drank when he was growing up, he denied it 3 yrs ago.
He told me about a month ago,in a moment of drunkeness, his grandpartents had to drive searching for his dad from bar to bar because he had no drivers license and his mom could not find him. She had a bunch of kids at home and he was the 2nd oldest.
Now, I think he has passed it down, and his son has lost his drivers license and gets so drunk he becomes mentally unstable and starts talking crazy. He is 28 and still lives at home and cannot get out on his own because he drinks so much.
Do you think its hereditary?

Best answer:

Answer by ginarene71
It is a result of “nurture” plus “nature”. A learned habit(or lack thereof) and also a genetic flaw.

Question by mollydolly: Help managing alcoholism?
I am trying to break my addiction to alcohol on my own and fear, from past experience, that I will fail. I can’t go to rehab because I am raising three kids. Yes, I do know how awful that is. That’s why I’m trying to get help. Are there any supplements that help with cravings and/or withdrawal? I can’t go to AA because my husband says I’m just going so I can meet people and cheat on him. He believes in the whole “get over it” ideal when it comes to things like addiction and depression. I feel weak and stupid that I can’t. I have continued drinking because it’s easier than dealing with everything associated with “recovery” and I hate how irratable and sad I become without alcohol. It’s kind of become a friend to me, dumb as that sounds. I need to be well for my kids. my pre teen recently commented on my drinking and it broke my heart. What can I do?

Question by Cherie A: My husband and I have been separated for three months, my choice due to his alcoholism?
We have gone through some counseling which he ended for some time when the counselor, our pastor of our church made him listen to how I feel. Now three months later, and we are actually able to talk, my kids, not his biologically, are wanting him to come home. I am not ready because he is still wanting to drink, I am not a drinker since I was 22 years old. How do I approach not only the kids, but also my husband on this issue. I am stuck.

Best answer:

Answer by Courtney K
Tell the kids that you are doing whats best for them and stick to your guns. You do not need that type of behavior around your kids. You need stipulations for him and I believe you have set the right ones. Stick to them!

I am working on recovery, but i would like to help my 12 yr old daughter understand why i am an alcoholic and what an alcoholic is.
any links to websites with guides would be great all I can find is how to talk to your children about the dangers of drinking.
i can’t find anything but how to deal with your alc. spouse or what your doing to your child. I am looking for something that can help my daughter understand what is happening in her house, I am not mentaly or fisically abusive but I do accidentally wake her up at night sometimes form talking too loud, I suffer from hangovers that turn me into a couch potato. I don’t want her to think these things are ok… help… Please… anyone?

Best answer:

Answer by John F
Go to the AA website, they will probably have information that will help.

Question by Forever Drinking: Should I let my neice write a paper about me and my alcoholism?
I’ll start off by saying I am a proud and happy alcoholic who gets drunk every night of the week. I’ve been going strong for decades now. I lost my wife and kids but it was MY choice because I wouldn’t stop drinking for them. I openly tell people that I would never quit drinking for anyone and that I am having the time of my life. I believe, just like all people, there are good alcholics and bad ones. I hold down a good job, have a girlfriend occassionaly and function in society. When I get home, though, it’s scotch and beer time until I pass out. My niece’s paper is how I feel alcoholics should feel a sense of entitlement. We should be proud of the decisions we make and if we don’t have a problem with our drinking and it’s not interfering with our lives, get rid of those who do have a problem with it. I want to be sure her paper shows me in a positive light and shows that alcoholism is just a label society created to make people who like to drink feel bad about themselves

Best answer:

Answer by livin life
are you kidding me??? you are the problem. You messed up several lives due to selfishness and you want people to admire you? Buddy, you are the biggest fake I ever heard. How could anyone be proud to be a loser?

Question by Joe C: alcoholism: can the child of an alcoholic dad (not mom) drink?
Im a 15 year old male, (5′ 6″ and 130lbs)…my father has been an alcoholic since he was 20 yrs old, he is now 45, and he has been sober for about a year…he was an alcoholic when I was born, and all through my childhood…many people tell me that “I should never ever drink” because alcoholism is “in my genetics”, I do not have the disposition of an alcoholic. I know this because about a week ago, I drank with a buncha friends, and I knew when to stop, and I haven’t had any craving at all. I didn’t binge drink, (I had a bit more than 10 shots over 3 hours). And aparently I have a high tolerance becuz I didn’t puke or fall on my face, and my friend (who is 200lbs) had the same amount, maybe a little more ended up puking lol…so I didn’t “not know when to stop”, cuz I cud have drank A LOT more, cuz we had a whole other bottle but I turned it down…I personally think that I have a shit load of will power, because I have turned down drinking and other “drugs” numeroustimes, the only reason I drank this time is because I was with really good friends (a group of like 9 othr ppl, and I’ve known them since I was like 2). With all this info, can whoever answers this give me an honest opinion of whether or not I can drink once in a while, or whether or not I should never drink…plz no bs answers, and I really don’t wanna hear about “morals”, or legality…to anyone who answers Thank in Advance!!!

Best answer:

Answer by Diet C
Being the child of an alcoholic, you are at an increased risk of becoming one yourself. It is suggested that children of alcoholics do not drink.

Question by Jenn W: Is alcoholism really a disease?
It’s hard to accept when your own mother chose and continues to choose alcohol over the presence of her own children in her life. How can this be so?

Best answer:

Answer by Ashera
Addiction is a disease. But, that doesn’t excuse someone neglecting to get treatment or letting it harm others in their life. All you can do is encourage her to seek help. There are plenty of resources available to her, she just needs to make the decision to change.
