Question by Nina R: Anyone out there had to go through Riv. Co. CPS to save children out of a meth home?
I was wondering what I need to do in order to become the legal guardian of my nieces. They haven’t been taken out of the home yet but I am preparing for the future. The family has appointed me as the person they would like to raise these kids in the event that they are rescued. Does anyone know what happens and what I can expect?

First thing to do is to report the parents for abuse and/or neglect and/or endangering the children. In order for CPS for any county to take any action, they have to receive a report of some type of abuse, neglect, or endangerment (unless you want to wait for the police to raid the house and then CPS may get involved at that point).

Then, CPS will evaluate the situation. Usually, they will try reunification with the parents. If the kids are taken out of the home, CPS will look for someone (usually a family member) to take care of the children – if said family member is willing (they will usually look to the siblings of the parents first, so that would be you since you said those are your nieces).

Please note, however, that in that situation (with CPS), only the parents & children are entitled to a court-appointed attorney. If you want someone protecting your interests, you would need to retain the services of an attorney on your own, at your own cost.

If you don’t want to wait for that event – and the parents are willing to give you guardianship now – then talk to a lawyer (at your own cost). The parents can certainly have you appointed as the legal guardian of the children now, if they choose to do so.

Question by Songbird: Would a baby who’s father is a meth addict have a child with small attention span?
My sister recently had a baby and her boyfriend has been addicted to meth for 6 years-supposedly he is clean now-but their baby is 6 months old and he has ZERO attention span! You have to be constantly walking or bouncing him to ease him. He has a really bad temper for a 6 month old-just wondering if this has anything to do with it?

i dont think so…the father only passed on genes…while the mother can pass on whatever toxins are in her system to the child. It’s either A) genetics or B) from your sister not doing what she was suppose to do while pregnant. Sorry i dont’ mean to accuse but that’s why doctor’s make such a huge deal about what a mother consumes while pregnant. The first 3 months are the most important months to a childs mental and physical development. If she didn’t find out that she was pregnant later in her first trimester and was drinking, smoking, eating unhealthy for those first few weeks that could affect the child’s developmental progress.

Question by June: Does Meth addiction make you want to suck blood?
i read this book called CRANK if any of you have heard of it and while being super high on E and Meth a bunch of these kids take turns using knifes to cut each other so they can suck blood of one another. does anyone know why?

If he stopped for you and the kids than that is a big decision he made. If you still love him, why not give him a chance? Unless you think he might go back to his old habits then you need to stay away. Keep the kids away from him even if his the father. Meth is no good!!!

I’ve been talking with several caseworkers recently and I’m astounded at the number of foster children that are resulting in adoptions due to their bio families not being able to get clean from Meth. What else can we do as a community to get folks to get clean (or don’t start at all) so they can raise their children?

My current foster daughter is in care due to Meth. She was born addicted to it. I’ll be adopting her next month because her bio mom just can’t stay clean or out of jail.
My foster daughter is mentally handicapped due to her mother’s Meth abuse. It IS that bad.
