I think we agree.
However, my personal experience with the subject is that ‘helping them understand’ can be quite an overstatement with depressed of confused youngsters. Of course, one should do what one can.

The symptoms alone don’t cause alarm, they’re almost always normal. But together they should send up a flag. You can’t always prevent a suicide, but you can always help them understand that these problems in their life are only temporary, suicide is a permanent answer to a temp. problem.
The problem is that EVERY adolescent shows at least a few of the symptoms in the list in the end. Also -my personal observation- even knowing that a person is suicidal and acting to prevent accordingly, will often not stop them from trying anyway. You can’t lock people up for depression, or low school results. Guess it’s always going to be a difficult subject, with uncertain outcomings. Parents and spouses should indeed be aware of symptoms, but for the rest..just pray it won’t happen.
