Question by jubba sloutmonkey: What advice can you give to a young alcoholic?
I have been drinking nearly every night for the last 4 years. I keep trying to stop , but keep giving in. I dont know where to start. I know this has got to be deadly serious but stop caring after the first drink. im 19 yo. can any1 tel me wot to do

You can go to AA and get some help from others that have been in your same situation.

You are in serious trouble if you can’t stop. You are an alcoholic and you need professional help. Go to a rehab, ask your family and friends for help and support. It is your responsibility to make the decision to stop drinking and never touch alcohol again. If you don’t make this decision no one can ever help you.
I’ve heard it said that alcoholism is a self diagnosed disease.
No one else can help but you.
Get online and find an AA meeting near you. There are all kinds of meetings — some for beginners, for teens, young adults, etc.

Alcoholism is a disease, but drinking is a choice. If you know the first drink destroys you, stop having it. Go to AA, get a sponsor and QUIT. This is going to get worse and worse, and it will destroy your life. It will ruin work, and your family and personal life. You will lose everything that’s important to you, including your health.
Only drink when Rush Limbaugh has a good comment on Obama.
I am an older alcoholic (in early recovery). I drank and used drugs everyday as often as I could for 19yrs. Thank God I found AA (and they found me) 17yrs ago. I have been in several treatment centers, and in and out of AA for the first 10yrs of the 17yrs. I have been relapsing every year for the last 7yrs. As the addiction, and I, get older, the craving becomes phenomonal AFTER I pick up. All I have to do today is exercise my right an privledge NOT to pick up. I just came from a meeting. I KNOW I will be OK as long as I do not pick up that 1st drink or drug. The urges to use get less often as I gain more sober days under my belt. I get into the routine of life, working and taking care of my responsibilities. There IS light at the end of the tunnel. Things WILL get better. My #1 thing I must remember, everyday, at all times is that I am an alcoholic/addict and my brain is broken. I cannot drink or drug like other people. My life is unmanagable when I do. I have found friends just like me at AA and I no longer feel all alone. They will always welcome me. My sponsor has me reading and doing homework and working the steps. Ya…I don’t wanna think about it everyday, and ya….I don’t like the homework, and Ya, sometimes I am t0oo tired to get to a meeting or call my sponsor, and ya….sometimes I just wanna get obliviated and forget about everything…but I can’t because then I will be fighting for my life and everything I have worked for. When I feel like that, I call her and get to a meeting and do some more homework, and read some more. I have been homeless, and hungry, and walking the street, and alone w/o my children or family because I used to live my life the wrong way. I do not live my life the wrong way TODAY! And I owe it all to AA and by the grace of God.
YOU have to WANT what we have and be willing to go to any lengths to get it…..Call the AA hotline and speak to a live volunteer who can get you to a meeting, where you can get the meeting book for meetings in your area and meet your sponsor who will begin you upon a new path and help you to make a new life for yourself. You have already started….by admitting that you have a problem. You need to find a local AA meeting in your area. They are all over and should be easy to find one. You obviously have a serious problem and if you don’t get help now your life will be a downward spiral into a dark, lonely hole. Go online or look in a phone book. AA will guide you and offer you the tools you need to conquer your addiction but you have to want it and you have to work the steps or it won’t work for you. I really hope you get the help you need. It will be scary at first, but just remember that you have already taken the first step. You can also find a sponser in AA who has been where you are and they can help you with what you need to do. This is free help. All you need to do is go. Good luck to you.
My best advice to any alcoholic, particularly a young one, is to stay away from AA. You are not going to benefit from the belief that you are powerless over alcohol and have a lifelong disease that can only be addressed by spending the rest of your life in meetings–and that’s what you are told and expected to believe in AA.
My own recommendation for anyone who feels that they could benefit from social support is to look up SMART Recovery. It has tools to help you become or stay motivated to quit, to deal with cravings and then to reframe your thinking so that you become a healthier individual and don’t turn to alcohol to cope.
