Question by aouija: What Do You Think Of Mandatory Drug Tests For People Who Want To Conceive?
I am talking about a program that requires you to get drug tested and take a parenting class before you can have a child. There could be a grace period for the parents if they conceive before getting a license to breed. Give them 6 months after they have their baby to do these and if not remove the child from the home. I have much experience with my stepsons mom. She abused meth, ecstasy, cocaine and marijuana and he was removed from her home by CPS and given to us full time. My husbands sister did her meth all through her pregnancies and her kids suffered greatly. My husbands parents were drug addicts as well. Firsthand experience tells me that SOMETHING needs to be done to prevent some people who are too selfish from having children.
I know it is just a pipe dream but one can wish.

I am for it.
Not only that, I believe you need to apply for a license from the government so you can have kids. You have to prove that you can financially support them, emotionally deal with them and that you will take care of them for at least 18 years. There are too many kids that are suffering in this world because there is no process to determine whether their parents are capable of raising them. That’s when the government should step in and issue licenses. If you have a child w/o a license – you should go to jail!

I think people are going to conceive whether you drug test them or not – no law can stop them from doing it on their own.
I think its a great idea! Some people just should not be allowed to be responsible for another human being’s life. Especially when they can’t even take care of themselves.
As good as this sounds it is very unlikely. It would be virtually impossible to put the drug addicts on a form of birth control that will keep them from having children until they are sober. If we lived in a perfect world this would be possible, but then again if we lived in a perfect world this would not be an issue either.
I applaud you asking this question. While I agree with you there must be something that can be done to address the terrible situations some children are born into. I believe you will find the states unwilling to tackle such an issue on several grounds. One would be that the government cannot legislate population or birth control. The United States decries that activities in China as an example, and it would be near impossible to pass the legislation. Another reason would be some would claim they could not be denied having children on religious grounds.
While I do not agree with the religious argument personally, others would argue they must to follow God’s commandments.
You are an intelligent and courageous lady to share with us all you have in your question.
God bless my friend,

It is an interesting concept but not very realistic. The government can’t regulate what people do in the privacy of their own bedrooms. As a former foster parent I am, however, very much a proponent for legal forced sterilization of women (and men for that matter) who have multiple children they can’t care for but continue having more! The bio mother of the foster kids I had had 5 children, she was 28 years old and her oldest child was 15. Do the math. She had been having children since her body was able to. They are all in foster care and she is free to have more if she likes and they will be wards of the state at birth. Something is wrong with that picture…
it would definately make sense to have some sort of program to “educate and improve” parenting. But part of the problem then is drawing the line and becoming a fascist state. It is abominable, in some states illegal to drink and or abuse drugs and in my opinion the highest form of child abuse there is next to sexual abuse. While I would initailly applaud any effort to break the cycle coming from a broken, abusive and addictive home myself, the realities and complexities of such a program and not to mention the rights that would be violated by such programs would make them difficult to pass. It is sad to think the government can only do so much to protect the children of our country and the inherent values that should accompany having a child.
How are you planning to implement this? Force an abortion on everyone who refused to commit to drug tests? Take the child upon birth? I’m not a drug user and I would refuse to give in to crap like this. I understand that you’re thinking about the safey of the kids; however, the cost of the “thoughtfullness” is too great. You’re stomping all over the rights of the parent. Innocent until proven guilty. This sounds like something China would come up with.
I think it’s a horrible idea. Not in and of itself, but once you take that step it opens the gate for other, more insidious types of things. Like telling people they can’t have kids because of their inferior genes, etc.
I think that women who use drugs or drink/smoke should be charged criminally, the same as they would if they blew crack smoke into a newborns face, or filled the childs bottle with 151. Because what they are doing is even worse then that. They are giving their child these things when the child is even more young, and precious then a newborn.
