Question by DodgerBlue42: What do you think of parents providing alcohol for their kids and their kids’ friends?
Part of me understands the rationale: “They’re going to drink anyway so they might as well be safe at home, with supervision, and we’ll have everyone’s keys, etc.” But at the same time, I don’t think a parent should be condoning underage drinking, especially with teenage alcoholism being the problem that it is today. What do you think?

I think that it’s wrong … parents need to set a good example and by condoning the drinking they are setting themselves up to criminal charges & possible lawsuits.

I know someone who went to jail for providing liquor for minors. It is illegal and I wouldn’t do it for my own kid either.
They’re not necessarily going to drink anyway, so it’s it’s idiotic and abuse to encourage that behavior.
Drinking in private is the worst way to drink. In France children are raised with wine at the table nearly from infancy. drinking responsibly is learned in families like anything else. learning about alcohol with a bunch of teenage delinquents has much more damaging effects.

I draw the line at family though. No friends will have anything that their parents did not approve of. and Nobody should drink to excess. if you want to get drunk, and puke on your shoes, do it with someone else. If you are having a cocktail prior to a dinner, fine. a tall drink after dinner, fine. drinking more than two drinks is insulting to the liquor, because you cannot appreciate the flavor after two drinks. after that it is abuse. I do not approve of abuse of anything.
Parents are not supposed to be their kid’s friend. When my kids say you’re mean I reply good then I’m doing my job. Our job is to keep them safe but at the same time teach them right from wrong. I would suggest the parent/ kid pact. The kid promises in writing that if he/she is ever in a position where they cannot drive home they will call a parent. Then the parents promise in writing that if the child calls they will pick them up and will not say anything that night. You get to punish them just not right away which is good because given the chance to think we can come up some pretty wicked punishments. My dad made me sign this pact and I never once used it until my 21st birthday.
It’s illegal. They’re teaching their kids that it’s ok to break the law. Not a good thing.
I understand. It is a different way to handle it. BUT then again, it shouldn’t even be an issue. As a teen, I had a friend who’s mother would allow us to drink in her house at sleep overs but would make sure NO ONE left her house. If MY mother knew this at the time she would have went over to that my friends house and kicked her mothers butt! I know this is not something I would do with my children, but how much can you protect them? You can do your part as a parent by teaching your children what is right and wrong but peer pressure is soooo difficult. I guess all we can do is trust and talk to our teens and keep an open line of communication.
I think NOT! It’s irresponsible and downright pathetic. You cannot say that they ARE going to drink anyway because that is not true. However, if parents supply the alcohol then they are showing the kids that it’s ok to drink. The adult should be an example but I’m beginning to understand why there are so many problem kids in this world! Say NO to alcohol and drugs!!! You’ill never regret it.
It’s wrong on many levels.
- Teenagers are still developing and alcohol can interfere with irreversible damage.
- Parents are trusting their kids are safe in your care. They’re not safe if you’re providing alcohol.
- To minimize their abilities to judge correctly at an age when they’re learning how to judge correctly can put them into serious danger – socially, sexually and physically.

i would never allow my son or daughters to drink in my house or even with me(im not a drinker). i think if they want to drink then they needto drink at the proper age. i have showed my kids pictures of drinking and driving accidents and they know what i went thru in my life living with alcoholics. they know they should wait until they are of age. i am trying to get them to have fun in life and drink is not a good idea if you want ot have fun. having fun is to go out with friends and being a teenager not growing up to fast. i tell my kids if they want to grow up fast and start drinking then they needto get a job and start paying bills, thats part of growing up. but if they want to act like a kid for as long as they can, then they need to leave the adult stuff to the adults.
It is illegal and they could go to jail for it. All it will take is one person turning them in, like one of the kids they provide it to or one of the parents of the kids. They are playing with fire and arent very smart at all.
I always wonder if those parents use the same rationale for everything. “The kids are going to have sex too, so here’s the bedroom…and they’re going to get drugs so here’s the marijuana and the cocaine…”
Drinking while your brain is still developing can change the way your brain works. It’s not something I want to set a precedent for. And drinking is not the only way to have fun. I’d rather teach safer ways to my kids and their friends.
