Question by Anthony: Why do people think lowering the drinking age to 18 is a good idea?
I was watching the news a lot of people think having the drinking age lowered from 21 to 18 is a good idea. That doesnt make any sense. There is way too much binge drinking about alcohol abuse among teens. I know a lot of teens drink illegally but lowering the drinking age would just make it easier for kids to get alcohol. Why make it easier for kids to get alcohol when there is enough problems with teen drinking as it it?

People drink underage because it’s forbidden. Making anything forbidden only makes people want it more. If you make it just a normal thing, it won’t be so cool to drink. Also, if it’s legal people will drink out in the open and where adults can make sure they’re alright.
And does it make sense to you that people should be able to die for there country at 18, but not be given the freedom to drink?
What do you think? Answer below!

It is possible that those thinking it is a good idea are relying on the fact that there are a number of voters between the ages of 18 and 21? In an election year? Just presenting the thought.
It should not be lowered due to the fact that some people are still growing until they reach 21 especially boys. Studies have shown reasoning and judgement is altered tremendously if you are younger.
But you could argue….why have 18 yr old enlist in the army.
21 to drink and enlist in the army.
18 to drive.
Because prohibition didn’t work in the 1920s for the whole population, so it doesn’t work for a small segment of the population now. They’re drinking anyway, so its safer for them to do it out in the open compared to a dimly lit basement party or a kegger in the woods.
There’s also the pshycology of it. The teen brain always wants something it can’t have. Take away the forbidden fruit aspect of it, drinking will become mundane and boring.
Besides if your 18 you can smoke, go fight a war, sign contracts, vote, being held criminally liable for your actions, etc. The only thing you can’t do is drink, which is stupid. If your old enough to do those things, you ought to be old enough to have a beer.
This doesn’t have much to do with alcohol drinking, but one of the several reasons why I think the drinking age should be lowered to at least 18 is because I absolutely hate not being able to get into bars for music performances because I’m under 21. If I am old enough to vote, buy cancer sticks, live out on my own(and be entrusted with all the responsibility that entails), legally kill people, I should be able to enter a bar.
Also we have about four or more bars on our campus. Who are they for? the seniors?I feel that if people are going to open a bar at a college all years should be allowed to go in.
