Question by puffer fish: Why do teens abuse drugs? Where’s the line between normal use, recreational use and addicts?
Is it normal for teens (aged 16-19) to… get drunk once or twice a week, smoke weed everyday, do harder drugs, such as cocaine and ecstasy every other week, and take pills [xanax, morphine, soma, etc...] once or twice a week? How serious is the problem and why do they do such things? Is it beause of some sort of psychological impact that could have happened in their past? [family death, abuse, etc...] And what can that person do to get their life out of drug use?

ALL people (not only teens) should have been drunk, smoking or do harder drugs or taking pills. They do that because of, mostly, depression.
They were depressed because of peer pressure, they were forced to do that. Or because of other depression, like relationship or studies.

Well…Im 17. I smoke pot everyday to help with my meditation. I do acid and shrooms occasionally just because I love the effect on your mind. Coke I’ve done a couple times and I’m careful with it. Ecstasy is too risky for me to mess with, plus I’m not into party drugs that much. Pills are stupid and dangerous and I avoid them. I occasionally have smoked opium but I take care not get addicted. Since I’m a Buddhist I dont get drunk ever. Because its stupid and clouds your mind. So, there, theres me.
The thing is, drug use reasons vary for every person. Some do it to avoid problems or hide from them or whatever, but many just do it because they like the effects. Its no huge deal with most things as long as theyre well educated on the effects, risks, and whatnot. The key to drug use is to be professional. Know what youre doing, dont get addicted, and youll be fine. Drugs like crack and crystal meth are stupid and for the life of me I dont understand why people destroy themselves with those drugs. But other drugs, if used correctly, are relatively safe. For example, acid can be dangerous if you have a bad trip, but, if you have an experienced sitter there watching over you, everything should be fine.
Yeah, so thats it from me…. I hope that helps you.
Peace
Such behaviors are far from normal. In fact, the majority of teens (13-19) have only tried marijuana once or twice and have never used hard drugs of any kind.
As for why some teens choose to abuse controlled substances…that’s a question for the ages.
not all teens abuse drugs, and the example you have given is drug abuse and far from normal. teens are faced with a lot of issues in society, and the difference between some teens is the lack of self discipline boundaries and family support.
peer pressure plays a large part in experimenting with drugs, teens with lower self esteem and confidence are more likely to use drugs as a result of peer pressure ie. they want to fit in with everyone else.
teens are also taught certain attitudes to drugs by their families and those around them don’t forget many grow up watching their parents drink alcohol, while i’m not saying their parents abused it, they do show that alcohol is used to celebrate ie. new years eve, bbq”s etc…
the problem is serious but not as serious as the media portrays. only 3% of drug deaths are caused by the sorts of drugs you describe, the rest are caused by nicotine and alcohol. the biggest problem is the amount of teens smoking cigarettes.
there are plentay of AOD services for people who’s drug use has got out of control, look in your phone book or ask a doctor to refer you to A service. asking about it is the first major step to defeating the problem, and you will. Good Luck
In our society where any substance use is viewed through a 12 step lens not much qualifies as normal or recreational. This is an institutional problem. Substance use is a choice. The key is to figure out why someone is making that choice at the expense of him/her self. There is no solid causal link between depression and substance use or some trauma and substance use. Look into rational recovery or read the book alternatives to abstinence. The AA phenomenon is on the order of fast food nation or Wal Mart trying to take over the world.
I believe that teen drug use has a lot to do with peer pressure! If all your friends are doing it and they seem fine, you might try it too. Teens don’t immediately see the down side of drug abuse because everyone around them seems to be “just having fun”. The kind of use you are describing however, seems to be a bit much for any teenager-or adult for that matter! Sounds like someone needs some professional help to me. Make sure they get it before its too late, please.
