Question by JustJenn: Will Obama’s self admitted drug use make kids think drugs are cool?
Many have been critical about Obama speaking out about his drug use, he said to Jay Leno, that he DID inhale that was the point! He has talked to high school kids about his Cocaine use and Pot smoking. HOW is this a good image for our youth?

No worse than Bill’s self admitted (or not) indisgretions will make kids think adultery is cool.

Seems to me that honesty is a virtue.
Bush did cocaine also and no kids thought that was so much cooler. alot of the people in office have tried drugs when they were younger but that doesn’t mean that they are promoting the use of drugs. i think that him being honest and actually admitting it is better than lying and saying no you never did it only to find out later that they did.
They’ll probably plan on running for public offices, after they write about it in their biography.
Would you rather him lie about it… kids experiment all the time.. regardless of what they grow up to be… if he is talking to high school kids about what drugs did to his life then that is great… hopefully it will keep the youths of today from experimenting
I don’t think he’s bragging about it, I think he’s learned from his mistakes and is trying to educate people on what not to do.
Maybe people can relate to him better if he seems like he’s human instead of some perfect God they can’t even touch.
I personally don’t think it necessarily promotes drug use, but one positive side of his admissions could be hope for kids who are on drugs to realize that they can turn their life around and become a successful adult (like Obama).

At least they make think that HE is cool and respect his candor and honesty. What he said is a whole lot easier to swallow, if you will, than what Bill said about smoking and NOT inhaling. Puhleeze!
It would be a good starting point for parents to talk to their children about drugs and IF parents are intelligent enough they can read that part of Obama’s book that detailed it and also highlighted that it was a lousy choice to make and that he realized that no one was going to save him, he had to save himself. It also shows that there is hope after making mistakes, not that their life has come to an end based on bad choices.
He is cool in that he was HONEST enough to admit he did something wrong and the fact is he did this way BEFORE he entered political life. He did that in 1995, he enter politics in 1997.
Seeing how Bush still is a cokehead alcoholic (hey, the secret service looks the other way as his drunken twin daughters were breaking the laws on underage drinking, so you can be sure they secure a supply of coke) is what would inspire young people to use drugs, get the power, disregard the laws.
It shows them they can burn out their Brain Cells and still run for President of The United states.
And that is just what we know about Obama’s past; what about what we don’t know……..those days in Chicago and before that – his days supporting his Muslim friends. How is it good for the youth of America to know Obama’s racist affiliations, and their plan to return this country to the day’s of racial unrest. Martin Luther King fought and died for equal rights; and Obama is stomping on his memory and his valuable contribution to our country. He is using Dr. King’s memory to incite racial tension and usher in a new era of racial discontent. Shame on you Obama – and shame on your racist friends who are pulling strings behind the scenes. You are a Disgrace to your Race.

Amongst blacks it is considered “cool” to say you were a “thug/gangsta/hoodlum” etc in your youth, but then you “miraculously” overcame the “odds of America holding you down” and now you’re a successful politician or judge (Judge Mathis always says this too).
Can’t you come up with something better than that? You must be getting desperate. Bill Clinton smoked pot and committed adultery. George W. Bush did cocaine and got picked up for drunk driving. Better luck next time.
Honesty is a good quality…. Self righteousness is far more destructive than honesty.
That being said, Obama will lose.

I don’t think his admission is making kids think drugs are cool. He seems to be telling people to “clear the air” so that his political opponents have one less thing to throw in his face.
The fact is I see his admission to past use as a good thing, the fact that he turned his life away from drug use to be a successful Lawyer and politician may show some young people that are caught in the self-destructive cycle of drug use that there is a way out.
Kids look up to people and do what they do. Some kids will use it as an excuse, others will see it as a smart thing to stay away from. BTW – Kids learn more from their parents… ummm if they are around.
What amazes me is that this use of cocaine, even one time, is a felony! Experimenting is a not an excuse for committing a felony. Nor does it matter even if it was a long time ago. It’s a felony! And pointing to someone else’s “worse” behavior doesn’t make it OK. It’s a felony. How is breaking the law OK to teach kids, or allow someone to run for president? This person will have charge over the nuclear arsenal!
If obama denied using and then a former friend/associate came forward with some sort of proof his campaign would be sunk. Coming clean was his only option. He’s admitted it was a mistake and doesn’t condone or endorse drug use. Our current president used drugs and admitted it as well. He had no other option, I personally don’t think it’s a big deal so long as he’s not using them anymore.

uhm ok, ridiculous question. George Bush had admitted using cocaine and I don’t think the teenagers of today are talking to their friends and saying, “hey George bush did coke, maybe we should do it!” Obama was being honest, at least he admitted to what he had done in the past. Look at all the media today, blame that before you blame the Presidency. Youth of today are more opposed to doing something they saw on TV or the internet, they don’t care about politics. Get a life….

Exactly the opposite if he works it correctly. Kids will listen to someone who has “been there/done that” and pulled himself up to the position that Obama now occupies. As a teacher I always took a lot of flack for admitting I had done pot in my misspent youth and advocating the legalization of marijuana, but I also was able to engage in real dialogue with some kids who needed it and would NOT listen to the chirping, namby-pamby, bourgeoise teachers (a vast majority of useless goody-twoshoes) who never knew what the kids’ lives were like.
He was talking to them so that they would not do the same thing he did. Lots of people did drugs when they were young but end up getting off of it.
