Question by Metal Mike: Would you want your children to attend a college that allowed guns on campus?
At an age of binge drinking, relationship problems and diverse cultures in many cases coming together for the first time. Would this be a good environment for guns?
I have not been on every college campus but everyone I have been on had armed Campus Police. I’m talking about armed students.

Umm…no. My daughter goes to school in the midst of downtown Chicago. There are enough guns there as it is.

Definitely no! One scuffle with another pupil and the gun could come out. Especially when they are all at a drinking age , a drunken fight could result in serious injury , and if guns are involved then maybe even death.

Guns should not be allowed on any college campus due to to what you just said. Drinking can cause fights between men and if they are allowed to carry guns, you know they’re gonna use that as their main weapon. Racism is a big factor that contributes to school shootings as well. So, this being said, what kind of college would allow guns on campus?

There is a total ban on guns in Washington DC. It posted more gun related murders in a year than both neighboring states and that includes Baltimore, one of the most dangerous cities in the country.
Well, at the Ivy League institution I work at we do allow guns on campus but they must be registered with the campus police and stored there.
Working in the residence halls I see some ramifications. I’m marginally okay with the idea of conceal and carry given specific restrictions and a specialized workshop for those students.

I would. People are allowed carry guns. That right is protected by the 2nd amendment in the constitution. It’s not guns that are dangerous, it’s the person carrying the gun. Your children should not be hanging around people who are not mature enough to handle a weapon with that much power. So if your children hang around mature people, they should be fine.
Ask the parents of the students killed at Virginia Tech if they wish someone had been armed and able to stop the madman who murdered their child.
I would be a lot more scared to send her to a campus that didn’t. Make some simple rules:
1) Mandatory YEARLY training.
2) No record of any sort of violence.
3) Must have a permit from the college that covers the college, legally.
It’s time. We’ve seen where guns are used: Wherever men and women AREN’T allowed to use guns.

I live in AZ, so that may tell you how I feel about guns. First, I believe all gun owners should know how to use their weapon. My daughter is not even a teen yet, but she takes gun safety classes once a year. At least once a year she fires the guns we have so that it reminds her that this is a weapon of power.
When people like that have guns, we are all safer.

I wouldn’t want my kids going to a school that wasn’t prepared to deal with illegal shooters, either by allowing campus police to be armed, or allowing carefully selected and trained teachers to carry concealed firearms. The reason that school shooters have so many victims is that there is no one on the scene who is capable of stopping them once they get started.
Two things college should have…a vote or a gun.

Like not allowing guns has saved so many lives. Maybe if just one teacher or student had been carrying a weapon LEGALLY schools like Virginia Tech would have seen a different outcome. Criminals will always have guns.
HELL YES!! An armed society is a polite society. If you know that everyone else on campus is potentially armed, it will cut back on crime. That is a guarantee. Keeping guns off of college campuses lets criminals know that these people are easy marks because they cannot defend themselves with a reciprocal level of threat.
If you are worried about a hot bed of dissent, why not outlaw knives on campus, or pens, or books. I hear all of those items have been used to kill in the past.
Sure if the School offered advanced studies in the subject my children were majoring in.
Would I want my child to attend a college that allowed guns? No, not in a million years. But will you stop someone from coming on campus and starting another massacure? It’s such a sad world we live in.
I would accept the fact that teachers be allowed to have guns if they were trained and went through proper psychological testing. I think they would be the most logical choices in defending our children and being a deterent at least.

What you people dont seem to understand is that they do not give away concealed carry permits like candy. In most states there is a very long list of things you must have never done against the law to qualify for. I had to undergo not only a state police, but also an FBI background check. Statisticly concealed carry holders commit far less crimes, even minor ones, then the general population.
There have been few if any shootouts over arguments. Most states require that if you are going to drink one drink, you must unload your gun and lock it up.
Why do you think so many shootings happen in schools and churches? Because the people don’t have to worry about being shot.
I doubt if somebody like you that doesn’t bother to research things for yourself, and gets their info from the anti gun groups, would understand. thats ok though, it’s your choice, and when the cops aren’t there in time, and your wife or girlfriend is getting raped or worse, and you are powerless to stop it, I want to see you laugh then.
Look at it this way…… the THREAT comes from the ILLEGAL gun owner….. and he/she is going to carry REGARDLESS of the law and the “gun free zone” signs.
Until you can explain how being 100% DEFENSELESS can some how make you “safer”….. I’d love my kids to be allowed to carry on campus IF THEY CHOOSE.
It’s preferable to one that was a known “gun-free zone” and therefore at the mercy of any criminal or crazy in the area.

It you look at the University of Utah (which allows concealed carry) versus other schools which do not allow guns, you will see there is a difference in crime on campus. Plus-tragedies like Virginia Tech could possibly be avoided. I know if I had a gun and some maniac jumped in the room and started shooting, I would shoot back, and believe me, I never miss (been shooting since I was 4)
